Overcoming Procrastination: Today. Not Tomorrow.

How many times have you made a decision to do something…and how many of those somethings have you actually accomplished? (oh, no.)

If you’ve ever struggled with overcoming procrastination, you know exactly how this goes. And, yeah, I’m guilty of it too.

“I’m going to clean out the basement so I could exercise down there.” (The actual exercising, is a whole other ball of wax.)

Then there’s the “I’m going to sit down and write that Birthday note to my great aunt who would probably have her day brightened a bit to know someone was thinking of her.”

Oh, and then there’s the oldie but goodie “I’m going to review those website pages to make sure they’re delivering AI enabled SEO content but are still in my voice.”

But there’s always something more important than cleaning the basement. By the time you get the birthday card, the date has long since passed, and Aunt Margie is still within her wits enough to know you blew it.

And the website review? It just feels soooo daunting. The truth is that too often, we pretend we’ve made a decision.

What we’ve really done is jotted that down on our mental to-do list, until it gets too uncomfortable. Then we just hit the delete key a few times and add another commitment that may never be realized.

Do it enough times, and a sneaky thought starts to emerge.

I can’t get anything done. Forget about being successful! I am an unfocused, uncommitted failure.

Ok, well, things may look bleak, but it’s probably not all that bad.

I’ve been like that with marketing.

When I sat down to find my first 10 new leads, I was tentative. I’ve done this before. Even paid for lead gen. It was miserable.

But, I stuck with it. I followed through.

To his credit, because Marc Scott simplified things, it seemed much less daunting.

Then, because I was actually doing it, and knew I could keep doing it whenever I wanted, I started to see a little daylight. That’s the funny thing about overcoming procrastination, it happens little by little.

I tell you, just taking one, tiny, minute step in the right direction had me actually saying “Wait, am I looking forward to marketing?”

Not only that, but when you have a brighter outlook, you start to notice other things that went right.

Maybe your auditions felt pretty good.

And then a repeat client needed more work.

And your pickups for another client weren't just approved, but they were grateful for how fantastic they worked out.

Tiny little successes compounding, one on top of another. Suddenly, you feel like you’re really building the thing.

Friday, I felt more positive. And thinking about the wins of the day, I was downright confident.

This is the feeling I have wanted for my workdays for so very long. Good vibes, work accomplished, forward motion. And I can breathe.

I hadn’t just pretended to make a decision. I actually did it. And can do it again.

So try it. Pick out one little thing you can do to improve your situation, and just see if accomplishing that, doesn’t have you looking for other wins you can claim and pile on top.
