Being The Voice They Call Back
Every voice actor dreams of being that person. The go-to voice. The one clients call again and again without having to be reminded, marketed to, or auditioned for. The relationship where trust has been built, workflows are easy, and communication just clicks. (Full disclosure: I have an actor's crush on Jan. You've known her from Toyota ads since 2012. Jan really is the poster child for rebookability! She’s been showing up for Toyota longer than most of us have kept a car. Always friendly, polished, reliable. The exact qualities clients look for in a voice actor they want to work with again and again. And she's probably like that in real life too. Oooohhh, Jaaan.)
But the truth is, “set it and forget it” doesn’t exist in our business. Even with regular clients, the work of maintaining that trusted connection never really stops. It’s part of what we do. Part of being seen as a valued, professional, reliable member of the team.
Making the Right Impression
You’ve landed the booking. You can see this client produces content often and you're thinking, there’s potential here! So how do you make sure you’re the voice they want to call again?
It’s actually pretty simple.
First, be on time. Always. For a directed session, connect early to check your tech. For self-recorded projects, under-promise and over-deliver. Tell them you’ll have files in two days, but deliver in one. That kind of reliability stands out.
Quality Counts
Next, deliver pristine audio every time. I'm talkin' 48k/16 bit...or even 24 bit. They can always compress or tweak it later, but it’s hard to improve poor quality. Whether you’re using Smash, WeTransfer, Dropbox, or Google Drive, the rule stands: Go high or go home.
Nail the Pickup
When pickups come in (and they will), resist the urge to rerecord large sections unless they’ve asked for it. You might erase something they loved about your first take. Instead, learn to match your inflection, pacing, and tone so those new lines blend seamlessly with the original.
Producers Love the ABCs Always. Be. Creating. Give them three truly unique takes of a line. Presenting fresh approaches to the same content will blow their socks off!
Know Yourself—and Your Strengths
It’s wonderful to have range, but knowing your sweet spot is what gets you repeat work. That recognizable sound, the one that feels natural to you, is often what drew them in to begin with. Market it, own it, and deliver it consistently.
The Human Element
Be personable. Be professional. People hire people they like. Being easy to work with often matters as much as your vocal skill. Respect their time, meet their specs, follow file-naming conventions, and don’t rewrite the script unless invited to. Confidence is good. Humility is better.
Thank you, Sir, may I have another
And finally, always express gratitude. A sincere “Thanks so much for booking me” still goes a long way.
You never know when (or from where) that dream repeat client will appear. But by showing up with consistency, warmth, and professionalism, you make it easy for clients to come back again and again. That’s how you become the voice they count on.
