Show Up Messy. You Can Fix Messy. You Can’t Fix Nothing.

Some days, the words flow. The takes land. The mic loves you.And some days… well, you’re lucky if you remember to hit record. I'm having one of those days right now. I was out doing dog club things late last night, the event was frustrating (like just so triggering, and darn it, don't other people understand that this is supposed to be my happy place!). I got home late, so my sleep routine that I love was "off", and I woke up this morning thinking, I'd rather contemplate my navel all day than actually record. I even listed to a positive podcast while I showered, punched on my favorite Sirius channel while I finished getting ready (The Struts artist channel) and still my motivation level remains...subterranean.
It’s easy to wait for the “perfect” moment — the quiet house, the rested voice, the sparkling motivation. But waiting for perfect is just another way of stalling. Because perfect never shows up first. You do.
Here’s the truth: messy can be edited. Messy can be shaped, polished, improved. But nothing? Nothing gives you nowhere to go.
That first take, you know, the one the one where your timing’s off and your tongue forgets how to behave, is still a million times better than the one that never happens. That rough cut gets you moving. It breaks the inertia. It reminds you that you don’t have to be amazing right out of the gate. You just have to start.
The magic doesn’t happen in your head. It happens when you show up, flaws and all, and give yourself something to work with.
So today, I'm gonna forget perfect. Forget polished. Yeah, I might accomplish fewer auditions or waste some time watching Rocky Kanaka or Midlife Stockman videos on YouTube, but I'm still going to show up. I can fix messy. I can’t fix nothing.
