Why an Accountability Partner Just Might Be the Missing Piece

I write about motivation a lot. And honestly, that’s because we need it.

You might think that it’s because I’m surrounded by these amazing sources of it. And, I mean, I guess I am…if you look close enough.

But the truth is that keeping yourself going every day is just tough. If you worked in an office you’d at least have teammates to celebrate wins with…or the flip side, those Debbie Downers that drag us all into the pit of despair.

So maybe that’s not worth the risk.

But that’s why I’m always looking for positive quotes, or to my motivational calendars. This work is so incredibly solitary that you can go days without speaking to another soul. Except of course housemates.

Is this why people hold up the line at Starbucks? They’re desperate for human connection and finally have a captive audience in the poor person at the register? OMG…have I done that?  (whew) No. Because I don’t even leave the house!

Something’s missing. And it’s not motivation.

I’ve often thought about accountability.

And, having just completed Marc Scott’s 100 leads challenge, it was helpful. Low key pressure, just enough to keep you moving.

Then I listened to an interview with Billie Jo Konze, who runs an accountability group, and has for years.

I remember years ago another talent suggested an accountability group to me, and I was all “No. I don’t need that.”

Because I’ve always been a self-starter, getting the thing done for the sake of checking another thing off the list. I take a lot of pleasure in a completed to-do list.

But running your own business isn’t one job.

It’s all of them.

You make the product. You make the product samples. You train to get better at both of those. You market the product. Aaaaannnnddd….you maintain the systems that allow you to produce and bill for the product. What I do need is a consistent ear to hear about the struggles, celebrate the wins, and get tips from. And also make sure I’m checking some things off the to-do list...and make sure I'm checking off the right list items. I’ve got my list. Now, I’d welcome a partner. I think what I need is accountability.

A real human.

10–15 minutes a week. No fluff.

The kind of accountability partner who actually shows up…without judgement. If that sounds like you, say so in the comments.

We’ll try it for a few months and see if it sticks.

We’ll keep each other on track, and out of the loony bin!
