For the Holidays, the a Caring Voice is the Name of the Game
Every summer, the planning meetings start. A hospital is mapping out its holiday patient stories. A nonprofit is shaping its year-end giving appeal. A family brand is building a spot around the table, the kids, and the chaos of the season.
And somewhere in each of those meetings, someone says, “We want it to feel caring.”
Of course you do. They all do. Hospitals, nonprofits and family brands are asking people to trust them, give to them or choose them when it comes to making memories, and none of that works with a distant, announcer-y voice.
So the question isn’t whether your campaign needs a caring voice. It’s which kind.
Some campaigns need warm. Comforting. Steady. A voice that says “we’ve got you” and lets the story do the heavy lifting. Think of a hospital spot about a family getting through a hard season, or a family brand capturing a quiet moment at the kitchen table.
Others need uplifting. A little forward lean, a little lift, a voice that says “here’s what we can do together.” That’s often the sweet spot for a giving appeal, where the listener needs to feel hopeful enough to act, and to believe that miracles really do happen.
And, honestly, plenty of scripts need both. I see a lot of copy that starts in a tender place and ends somewhere confident and motivating, sometimes in the same 60 seconds. The voice has to make that shift feel natural, not like a gear change or a totally different spot.
Here are three things I do to land the right kind of caring voice:
I ask who the listener is, not how it should sound. “You’re talking to a worried parent at 2 a.m.” or “You’re talking to a neighbor who’s thinking about donating” gives me far more to work with than “make it caring.”
I find out where the listener should land. Comforted? Hopeful? Ready to give? Ready to book the appointment? When I know the destination, I can shape the whole read to get them there.
I move fast. Holiday timelines are tight, and plans change. A late script edit, a new cutdown, an extra tag. I turn projects within 24 hours, often the same day, and I offer live-directed sessions at no extra charge, so you can hear the read you’re picturing and we can adjust on the spot. When the calendar is closing in, responsiveness matters as much as the read itself.
The best holiday campaigns leave someone feeling a little less alone, or a little more hopeful. I love being part of that.
