The Most Valuable Thing a Professional Voice Actor Delivers Isn't Audio

Creative directors, executive producers and instructional designers hire me as a professional voice actor to record their projects. But that's not the value I deliver. It's really the reliability, trust, consistency, collaboration, and problem-solving that drive the booking. Delivering clean, clear audio with fast turnaround and a pleasant voice matters, sure. But those “other” qualities are where you really stand out.

Reliability

Producers aren’t just contracting a voice. On the surface it may look like that. But in the back of their minds, they’re thinking "I hope I cast the right talent." They’re investing in the confidence that you'll hit deadlines, answer emails, and be easy to work with. When you are, they’ll be glad they booked you and you’ll be that much easier to book again.

Consistency

Those sneaky little pickups. I play a game with myself. I listen to ads more than watch them, and I try to spot the pickups. You can find some if you pay attention. The flow’s not quite there. The volume is just slightly different. The intention is off and the two pieces don’t gel side by side.

Imagine if you can make the pickup so seamless it’s impossible to pick out. Now imagine months later when there’s been a change in the project. Being the talent who can match mic placement, levels, pacing, and the intention of that hospital spot, even when you've spent the last month recording audiobooks? That's what makes you not just a professional voice actor but a rock star.

Problem Solving

It's those of us who really comb through a script to confirm how dates and model numbers should be read, who clarify pronunciations and ask questions about tricky script segments that win the day. The attention to detail shows you’re on their team and that you’re invested in not just completing the work and getting paid, but that you truly want it to be a success. And providing alternate takes works just as well if you can’t get answers in the moment.

Relationships

Clients I’ve worked with for years know that I’ll not only deliver (likely well before I promised to) but that I care about them as a person. Because the job isn’t their life. It's a tiny part of who they are, and since I already know the work pieces that are important to them, I also want to hear about all the amazing things that are happening in the rest of their lives.

So when I’m recording for Mitzi, I’m not just recording for the Creative Director. I’m recording for the fun-loving gal in Virginia who loves her family, her rescue dog, fireworks and baseball. She’s someone I also like to call a friend. And who doesn't go the extra mile for a friend? And if I can make my friend’s life easier, you know I’ll do it.

Many of my best clients have worked with me repeatedly for years. That's not because I recorded a great file once. It's because I've built trust.

At the end of the day, anyone can send an audio file.

The voice may get you h ired the first time. Reliability, consistency, problem-solving, and relationships are what bring clients back.

If you can make someone's job easier, they'll remember you long after they've forgotten the project itself.
