The “Act As If” Mindset (And Why It Changes Everything)

We’ve all heard the line “fake it till you make it.”
I prefer the way Simon Sinek phrases it: “Act as if.”
When you think of your situation, is your first thought
I can't, because…
It'll never work, because…
I’ll never…?
All those thoughts stop you cold.
You don’t because “you can’t”.
It’ll never work so you don’t even try.
You’ll “never get there” so you just don't even think about it.
But what if you made decisions as if things were going to work out exactly as you imagined? Without fear of crashing and burning?
See, when we don’t believe something is possible, we don’t just doubt it. We behave differently.
We hesitate.
We hold back.
We don’t follow up.
And then we call that proof.
But the reason you’re not confident, is that you’ve been keeping yourself from the opportunities that might just lead to the life you want.
See confidence doesn’t come first. Action does.
If you don’t wait until you feel ready, that “Act as if” mindset creates the evidence that you can or will.
One small “yes” starts to rewrite the narrative. One tiny action disrupts that feeling of being stuck.
And over time, your brain starts doing what it always does.
It looks for proof to support the story you’re telling it.
And look at that, you’ve tried a few things and now have a fistful of proof. So the world feels a little lighter.
Need a practical example?
I submitted for the One Voice Awards. I thought “Man, this is a long shot. But, it's free. So I guess I’ll try.”
I wasn’t even checking on nominations…someone else had to nudge me saying “I think there’s an update from OneVoice.”
I’ll be darned if that little action didn't work out!
So maybe the work isn’t to force yourself to feel more confident.
Maybe the work is to act as if… like the version of you who already has what you’re after.
That doesn’t mean blind optimism. It means taking strategic actions.
You prepare. You show up. You stay ready, so when the big opportunity does show up, you receive it confidently. You act as if you already have it, whatever that is.
Because belief shapes behavior. And behavior shapes outcomes.
And if that’s true…then the story you’re telling yourself right now matters a whole lot more than you think.
